This lovely, homely looking cake was made as a gift for a 75 year old mum. Knowing that her favourite activities centred on growing and collecting flowers from her beloved garden, I baked a moist, delicious carrot cake and set about transforming it in to a basket of blooms. The carefully piped wicker-work of the brown basket is reflected in the handle arching over the top of the surface, on the stalk of the flowers and in the beautiful lettering. I created a multitude of daffodils and their bright yellow is also picked out in the lettering and the centres of the other delicate, smaller flowers. A contrast is provided by the green leaves, giving an overall effect of warmth and simplicity.
