For this very traditional Christening, the parents wanted a classic, elegant design based on one of Beatrix Potter's most famous tales, Peter Rabbit. Having baked a wonderful chocolate-orange cake, I researched many illustrations of the character and successfully reproduced a lovely image of Peter squeezing under a fence. The chocolate icing is heavily textured on the fence and the tree to give the picture some depth, further enhanced by the little blades of grass in the foreground. The lettering accurately reflects the well-known font of the book and is highlighted in a rich navy colour. The bright blue of Peter's jacket contrasts handsomely against the white icing and touches of colour are provided by the pink flowers on the tree and sides of the cake. I also added an iced collar, edged in the same blue as the cake topper and this gives the whole design a more traditional, timeless look that suited this little boy's Christening event to perfection.
Oliver's mum wanted to celebrate this special event with a simple, elegant cake that reflects her family's love of the outdoors. Having selected a chocolate cake and discussed various ideas, I got to work creating this beautiful Moses basket that has been placed in the garden on a spring day. The wicker work was very carefully piped to look as realistic as possible and I added plenty of delicate flowers and leaves to emphasise the garden theme. Of course, a Christening is very much about the baby and a model Oliver was accordingly fashioned and placed in his basket with his pillow and blanket. Rather like the popular Anne Geddes baby photos, I have placed him lying on his front, and paid careful attention to the details of his face and hair. I was very pleased with the finished result, as were Oliver and his mum!
