This design was created for a true child of the 60s to celebrate her 50th birthday. Still very much a fan of the bold and brightly coloured patterns so reminiscent of that era, she wanted a rich fruit cake that I then set about transforming in to this flower-power affair! Covered in rich white icing, the beautiful, strong colours of the petals are scattered across the base and surface, with each flower being slightly different to the next. Small dots of varying sizes connect the flower design giving a really 'groovy' looking cake for the special day.
For this most exquisite of cakes, I baked Isabel's favourite flavour, lemon poppyseed, in an elegant square shape. The beautiful duck-egg blue colouring is delicate and subtle, yet also very striking. A skilled needle worker and quilter by profession, I highlighted this in Isabel's cake with an intricate swirling pattern in white, covering the sides and just a little of the surface. The overall effect of this is stunning, but in an understated and modest manner, much like the lady herself! The light and wonderfully flavoured sponge proved to be great success at her special birthday party.
For such an important birthday as this, the cake really is the focal point of the celebration. The family chose a classic vanilla flavour and wanted the colours of pink and lilac to feature heavily in a very simple, elegant and feminine design. The cake is iced in a perfect white with beautiful piping around the top and bottom, as well as some delicate lilac and pink edging to give just a hint of colour. I pride myself on my flower creations and created four arrangements of lovely roses for each corner of the base, again blending the chosen colour scheme to top the delicate green of the leaves below. Simple, elegant lettering top the cake perfectly and I'm happy to say the lady and her family were delighted with the end result.
For an avid fan of all things Pooh-related, nothing other than a cake featuring his favourite bear would suffice for this little boy's third birthday! Unconvinced by some of the more garish and bland supermarket versions, the birthday boy's mum preferred a more simple, natural looking design on a very tasty cake that everyone would really enjoy. I used a rectangular shape to create a Winnie design featuring a carefully copied bear looking for his beloved 'hunny' and surrounded by sweet little bees under the shadow of a tall tree of the Hundred Acre Wood. The bright yellow lettering and colouring on the design stand out perfectly and could not be mistaken for any other character. The birthday boy was thrilled to blow out his three candles on his very own Winnie cake!
To celebrate this scooter-mad young man achieving double figures on his birthday, he was due to enjoy his first visit to a skate park. To mark the occasion, his mum wanted a simple Victoria sponge that I then transformed in to a mini skate park, complete with a 'half-pipe', rails and grass. The smooth asphalt-coloured icing is set off nicely by the green of the park and each blade of grass is clearly visible. A model version of the birthday boy and his scooter are faithful recreations of the real ones, much to Macaulay’s delight! The cake is personalised with some funky, graffiti style lettering of his name and age. This design perfectly suited the event and was a very individual and tasty way to finish off his special day.
The aim of this unusual birthday cake was to create a big and bold design, but at the same time something light-hearted and personal for Mark, a farmer. A keen shooter who has always had problems getting rabbits, I made the most of his choice of a chocolate sponge to reflect the colours and landscape of the countryside. A perfect little model of Mark, down to his glasses and shooting outfit is clearly having a rest on a bale of hay while the pesky rabbits pop up around the base of the cake, cheerfully nibbling on carrots and enjoying themselves! Each little rock and blade of grass was created individually and Mark's lovely hunting companion, Jake, is sitting faithfully at his master's feet! Mark was delighted with the level of detail on the cake and of course, its beautifully moist and rich chocolate texture. A very satisfied customer!
